(b) Ni no Kuni Weapons

As players go along the Ni no Kuni story missions, they will be able to collect equipment, which includes weapons and body equipment, such as armor, boots, gloves, headgear, and accessories, to make their character more powerful in battle.

Weapons have different quality levels, and the higher the quality, the higher the combat power it grants the player.

Players get ten slots to equip up to 3 weapons, four body equipment, and four accessories such as necklaces, rings, and earrings. While all body equipment and accessories are not dependent on class, each character has a specific set of weapons that can be equipped.

Weapons in Ni no Kuni are tied to certain elements which require the player to keep a high elemental coverage to equip weapons. There are five elements which are water, fire, earth, light, and darkness.

  • Earth beats water
  • Water beats fire
  • Fire beats earth
  • Light and darkness counter each other

Weapons, accessories, and body equipment come in a Star-based system to determine the rarity of the item. 4-Star equipment is the rarest, while the 1-Star is the most common to find through the gacha system.

Aside from the gacha system, players can get weapons by crafting them using pieces and materials the player collects in rewards, by killing enemies, and during daily quests as well as the pieces of other weapons that the player finds useless.

Weapons and other equipment can be leveled-up, boosted, enhanced, or awakened to increase the strength, level, and star-based level of the equipment and the character’s combat powers when these items are equipped.

(c) Ni no Kuni Familiars

Familiars are friendly helper creatures that are generated from different elements and forces in the Ni no Kuni world. Players can collect, breed, and hatch familiars by exploring the game world and benefit from their familiar’s powers in battle.

Just like weapons, players can equip up to 3 familiars to assist in the journey and in battles as additional weapons. Familiars can belong to the fire, water, wood, light, and darkness element.

  • Fire beats wood
  • Wood beats water
  • Water beats fire

In terms of strength and efficiency in battles, familiars are divided into five tiers: Tier S, Tier A, Tier B, Tier C, and Tier D.

  • Tier-S familiars are the most powerful companions. This tier includes familiars like Hippocampus, Oroboros, Petal, Mite, and Hob-Goblin.

  • Tier-A familiars are the second best and can only be beaten by Tier-S familiars. This tier includes Shrimpaler, Flutterby, Crab-O-Lantern, Molten Lion, and Tumbelemur.

  • Tier-B familiars have average powers and will perform fine in battle if you equip them. This tier includes Bunnybot, Rimu, Draggle, Byrde, among others.

  • Tier-C familiars are less powerful and can only overpower Tier-D familiars. Bumbler, Prince of Whales, Naja, Disbelief, and Jabber are all Tier-C familiars.

  • Tier-D familiars may seem without any special skills, but a Tier-D familiar such as sillymander can cause a lot of damage with its firey breath. The problem is, it can do it to its owner Soul Diver too!

Familiar also have Star classifications to determine the rarity of their summoning. 4-Star familiars have a 4% rate to be summoned, 3-Star familiars have a 36% rate, and 2-Star familiars have a 60% summoning rate.

Ni no Kuni gives new players a chance to summon their first familiar randomly with the opportunity to roll up to 10 times to choose the familiar they like best.

Players must learn about familiars to know which ones would be best to choose for battles and exploring the Nameless Kingdom. These are a few of the familiars selected by the game creators to be featured on the game’s website:

(1) Petromaton (Earth, 3-Star)

Petromaton is a magical rock creature whose job is to protect the ruins of the ancient kingdom. This familiar stands still in battle until it sees an enemy, then it moves at surprising speed to attack with its rocky fists.

(2) Sillymander (Fire, 2-Star)
